The dance assembly is divided into two groups: a professional group (16 pairs) and a beginners group (8 pairs – only students of USAMV).

The orchestra comprises renowned instrumentalists of Cluj, all of them having graduated specialized higher education institutions.

Traditions” Ensemble – Somesul Napoca of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine from the town of Cluj Napoca, Romania was founded in 1973 by its artistic director, Mr. Dr. Zamfir Dejeu.

The aim of the group is to preserve and to cultivate the genuine folk creation of Romania, and especially that coming from Transylvania, remarkable by its specificity and universality.

The dancers have in their repertory about fifty traditional dances, which come from almost all the folk areas of the country, like: Somes Valley, The Transylvanian Plain, Bihor, Maramureş,Valea Agrijului, Codru, Podişul Secaşelor, Hunedoara and the instrumentalists can play an impressive number of songs from our folklore treasure.

The exact interpretation of the famous Romanian dances and of the played songs comes directly from folklore research carried by the group’s rulers, and proves the characteristics of the traditional Romanian creation.

The most complex dances in the group’s repertory are the ones from the Transylvanian Plain (the villages of Tritenii de Jos and Fărău): Purtata, Fecioreasca cu fată, Învârtita in the aksak rhythm, or Învârtita rară and deasă, in the straight rhythm (În două laturi, Hărţag). The binary, syncopated and asymmetric rhythms create a real polyrhythmicalness on the vertical line, and an unimagined polymetry on the horizontal line. We mention that lad’s dance in Romania recognised by UNESCO Heritage – 2015.

The classical Transylvanian trio, which consists of vioară (violin), contră and contrabas (double bass), is interpreting the dance music. The dancers take turns in an imaginative dialogue on different themes, such as about the dance. The boy’s dances are moments of great virtuosity. They slap their boots, competing against each other, and in the end each of them takes his girl and spins her around, out of pleasure or for the spectator’s delight. That’s how the so-called artistic euphoria is created. All these are completed by the chromatic variety of the festive Romanian national costumes, with all the colours of the earth on them. All the costumes have white fond and geometric or floral figures.

The group has two videocassettes and one CD-Videos and a DVD, while the orchestra has a disc that has been edited at the International Festival in Montoire France, an Electrecord disc, a CD and two audiocassettes. Many different instruments, typical for the Romanian folk music, are used: the shepherd’s whistle, “taragot”, bugle-violin, “daireaua”.

The CD comprises folkloric material that has been, for a long time now, part of the repertory of the instrumentalist soloists, of the orchestra and of the dance group. This material has been turned to its best having in mind the initial interpretations of the genuine folk bearers. There are also pieces of great popularity and virtuosity, like the well-known Ciocârlia (The lark), for instance, which is interpreted in a very authentic manner.

Since its foundation up to present, the group has got numerous national and international prizes, of which the most important are:

1974 – “The Gold Record” and “The Silver Necklace”, Dijon, France;

1976 – “The Festival’s Cup”, Messina, Italy;

1978 – Two first prizes for the orchestra and for the instrument soloists, Middlesbrough,

       (INTER-TIE), England;

1980 – The first prize for the orchestra and the first prize and the trophy for IUSTINA

       DEJEU, our singer, Middlesbrough, England;

1983 – “The Festival’s Cup”, Charolles, France;

1990 – “The Festival’s Cup”, Villefranche de Rouergue, France;

1991 – “The first prize for music”, Reims, France;

1993 – “The Distinction Certificate”, Drummondville, Canada;

1993 – “The Greatest Trophy” and the first prize for dancers (choreography),

       EISTEDDFOD, Roodepoort, South Africa;

1997 – Six prizes, TEESIDE INTERN, EISTEDDFOD, Middlesbrough, England;

1997 – First Prize at the “Cantece de Catanie Festival”, Cluj-Napoca ,Romania

1999 – Jury Preis, Ribnitz-Damgarten, Germany;

2002 – The Festival Trophy  „Transilvanian Festival“, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

2003 – “The Distinction Certificate”, Drummondville, Canada

2006 – II-nd Prize for Dances in Choreography, Llangollen International Musical EISTEDDFOD, England

2006 – “The First Prize”, for couple dance, Llangollen, England

2010 – “The First Prize”, International Folclore Festival I.O.V.,C.I.O.F.F.
