The University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Cluj-Napoca, will award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa upon the Vice-President of the \u201cGheorghe Ionescu-\u0218i\u0219e\u0219ti\u201d Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Prof. Dumitru Militaru, one of the leading figures in Romanian veterinary medicine. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at 11.30 am, in the \u201cMihai \u0218erban\u201d Aula Magna on the USAMV Cluj-Napoca campus.<\/p>\n
The honour will acknowledge an academic and scientific career spanning almost five decades, spent at the intersection of veterinary research, education, research management and the transfer of scientific findings into veterinary medical practice.<\/p>\n
For our university, however, the conferral of this title also holds a significance that goes beyond the scope of an academic ceremony. Professor Dumitru Militaru will be honoured not only for his impressive number of publications, projects or responsibilities undertaken, but above all for what he has built around him: research schools, teams, generations of students and researchers, and a culture of scientific excellence dedicated to the profession.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are people we meet in our professional lives and people who, through what they build, become beacons for an entire generation. For us, Professor Dumitru Militaru is such a beacon. Throughout his career, he reminds us that the true value of research is not measured solely in publications and honours, but in its ability to bring about positive change in the profession and to train people who will carry knowledge forward,\u201d says Prof. Dr Nicodim Iosif Fi\u021b, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca.<\/p>\n
Having trained at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at USAMV Bucharest, and following an initial period in practical veterinary medicine, Professor Militaru spent a large part of his career at the Pasteur Institute in Bucharest, where he rose from the position of research scientist to that of scientific director. His work spanned key areas of veterinary parasitology, animal pathology, immunology and modern diagnostics.<\/p>\n
His contributions also included research into major parasitic diseases, the development and use of modern diagnostic methods\u2014 , including ELISA, immunofluorescence and PCR\u2014as well as the development of products and technologies applicable to veterinary medicine. His scientific output comprises nearly 200 scientific papers and nine volumes and treatises, alongside his participation in numerous national research projects and programmes.<\/p>\n
As a professor, he has mentored generations of students, PhD candidates and early-career researchers, promoting high standards, critical thinking and scientific rigour; and as a research manager, he has contributed to the development of scientific teams and infrastructure and to strengthening collaboration between research, academia and veterinary practice.<\/p>\n
His academic recognition was complemented by his membership of the \u201cGheorghe Ionescu-\u0218i\u0219e\u0219ti\u201d Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, as well as by significant awards and honours bestowed upon him for his contributions to the development of veterinary science.<\/p>\n
The ceremony in Cluj-Napoca will also hold great symbolic significance for the veterinary community in Romania. It will bring together two important academic traditions of Romanian veterinary medicine and reaffirm a fundamental principle: the great figures of a profession do not belong to a single university, but to the entire professional community.<\/p>\n
By awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, USAMV Cluj-Napoca will therefore celebrate not only an exceptional career, but a professional life dedicated to knowledge, the training of people and the advancement of veterinary medicine.<\/p>\n
