Two essential oils produced at USAMV Cluj-Napoca, recognized at EU level for commercialization

Two essential oils produced several years ago at the Phytotechnics Discipline – Faculty of Agriculture of our university have received European recognition, following quality analysis, according to Reg. More specifically, the essential oil of lavender and the essential oil of sage have been notified on the CPNP portal, so they are eligible for marketing in the EU, meeting the recommendations for use, which are provided in the report and on the labels.
Prof. Dr. Dan Vârban, from the Phytotechnics Department, also produces other types of essential oils, which are available for sale in the university shops and at the stand in Iulius Mall, as follows: mint, Korean mint, hyssop, thyme, basil, tarragon, oregano.
“Before a cosmetic product can be placed on the EU market, it needs to be registered in the EU Cosmetic Product Notification (CPNP). This means that in order to sell the product under your own brand in the EU all the details are uploaded into the CPNP. The Cosmetic Product Safety Report has to be drawn up in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which harmonises and simplifies the regulation of cosmetic products in all EU Member States,” explained Prof. Dan Vârban.
Two essential oils have been recorded as being produced by USAMV Cluj-Napoca:
Lavender essential oil – intended to be applied to the body (neck and wrist area) by dermal exposure route and by inhalation without subsequent washing after application (no rinsing);
Sage essential oil – intended to be used as an essential oil for body massage, applied to the body without washing after application.
The raw material (lavender, sage) was harvested from the university fields and the oil was obtained by hydrodistillation. The products have been given a minimum shelf life of 30 months and a shelf life of 12 months after opening. Both essential oils are packaged and labelled in opaque 10 ml dropper bottles, the description says.
