The European Researchers’ Night 2024 is organized as the main activity within the SCIENCE4FUTURE-III project, funded by Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON), and Cluj-Napoca is joined this year by the Romanian cities of Iași, Bistrița, Sighetu Marmației, Beclean, Năsăud, Sângeorz-Băi, Pașcani and Hârlău, all of them joining the 400+ European Cities of Science and Innovation.
The main objective of the SCIENCE4FUTURE-III project is to present research results and methods to the general public in order to raise awareness of the importance of research, innovation and technology transfer activities and to gain public recognition of researchers, as well as to understand the impact of their work on the everyday life of the community. The project also includes the presentation of the activities, services and products of local and regional actors, with the aim of popularizing the contribution of the continuous development process based on research, innovation and technology transfer to the improvement of the quality of life and the sustainability of the socio-economic environment.
For one day, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to actively participate in scientific experiments, communicate with researchers, as well as get acquainted with the results of scientific research and how they are implemented.
The partners present at the event are diverse, have specific activities in a wide range of fields and fall into at least one of the following four thematic sections:
Section I – Future through the past
We aim to raise awareness of the value of cultural, natural and historical heritage and of the effort made by specialists in its analysis and conservation.
Section II – Science for the future: Research starts at school
We want to show that the first steps towards research are taken at school. Engaging students in science activities in school laboratories helps to increase their interest in research. We also encourage dialog between teachers, universities and the business community to make it easier for students to come into direct contact with scientific work in research centers.
Section III – Health and well-being through a clean environment
We aim to highlight the potential impact of human activities on the environment and disseminate as much information as possible on natural and man-made hazards, environmentally friendly technologies, green energy production and use, responsible waste management and recycling.
Section IV – Economic development through technology and innovation
We want to demonstrate that sustainable development is only possible through the use of modern technologies and innovation. Based on good practices, we aim to illustrate how research results are implemented in all sectors of the economy and how they are part of the products and services offered to the population in everyday life.
This project is initiated and implemented by the Babeș-Bolyai University, Faculty of Geography in Cluj-Napoca (Bistrița University Extension – project leader, in collaboration with the Center for Research on Settlements and Urbanism and the University Extension of the Faculty of Geography in Sighetu Marmației), in partnership with USAMV Cluj-Napoca, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Technical University “Gheorghe Asachi” of Iași and the Bistrița-Năsăud Museum Complex.
Project partners are represented by higher education and research institutions, secondary education institutions, as well as economic units, associations and NGOs.
