The European Mustelid Colloquium is organized for the first time in Romania at USAMV Cluj-Napoca. Central theme: European mink conservation

The University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (USAMV) Cluj-Napoca hosts, for the first time in Romania, the XXXVth European Mustelids Colloquium, from 24-27 September 2024, a major event dedicated to the ecology and conservation of mustelid species, organized by Vincent Wildlife Trust (UK), together with the Romanian Wildlife Society and Flora & Fauna Romania.

“This is one of the most important international events in this field, bringing together almost 100 participants from Portugal, England, Spain, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Wales, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Romania, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Wales, Bulgaria, Ireland, Romania, Canada and Canada. The colloquium is a valuable opportunity for exchange of information between researchers and specialists, who will share the knowledge necessary to protect these species essential for European biodiversity. The meeting is organized every two years and, of course, it is an honor for our university to host it for the first time in Romania”, said Prof. dr. Andrei Mihalca, from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of USAMV Cluj-Napoca

The central themes of the 2024 edition will focus on the European mink, the ecology and conservation of mustelids, and the research and monitoring methods used to protect these species.

A focal point of the discussions will be the critical conservation status of the European mink (Mustela lutreola – critically endangered according to IUCN), an iconic species essential to freshwater ecosystems, the European mink is now critically endangered and only exists in isolated populations in France, Spain, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine and the Danube Delta.

The guest speakers at the 2024 edition are Dr. Mihai Marinov (Danube Delta National Research and Development Institute), Dr. Andrzej Zalewski (Polish Academy of Sciences) and Prof. dr. Andrei Mihalca (USAMV Cluj-Napoca).
