World Water Day marked by the Faculty of Agriculture with a major event and a competition with prizes for students

To mark World Water Day, the Faculty of Agriculture of our university organized a very interesting event on 26 March, which included a competition with prizes for students under the title “Water and Climate – Solutions for emission reduction and climate change adaptation”.

The meeting held in several sections, hosted by the Red Amphitheater and the Biodiversity Research Center, was a good opportunity for specialists, students and economic partners to discuss this year’s central theme of World Water Day – “Glacier preservation” and its essential role in the hydrological balance.

The students entered in the competition gave presentations on the same theme and the best ones were awarded prizes, as follows:

First Prize, 1.000 lei – Haja Răzvan, Papp Raul

2nd Prize, 800 lei – Iulia Suciu, Victor Suciu

Third prize, worth 500 lei – Valentina Rednic, Andreea Cifu.

Academics from the Faculty of Agriculture, together with special guests at the event, gave several presentations emphasizing the importance of glaciers for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production and healthy ecosystems, and the importance of global carbon emission reductions and local adaptation strategies are essential.

Participants also highlighted some key messages on World Water Day:

As the planet warms due to climate change, our frozen world shrinks, making the water cycle more unpredictable and extreme;

For billions of people, water flows are changing, causing floods, droughts, landslides, rising sea levels and damage to ecosystems;

It is of paramount importance that we work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage our waterways in a more sustainable way for people and the planet.

World Water Day is coordinated by UN-Water – the UN’s inter-agency mechanism for all freshwater-related issues – in collaboration with governments and other partners.

To accelerate efforts to tackle water-related challenges, the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2018-2028 the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” www.un.org/en/events/waterdecade.

On December 22, 1992, the United Nations Conference on the Environment in Rio de Janeiro adopted Resolution 47/193, which made March 22 World Water Day. In Romania, this day has been marked since 1993.
