A breakthrough at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine: a pacemaker implanted in a bulldog by a medical team formed by Prof. Dr. Iuliu Scurtu and the coordinator of the Heart Institute, Prof. Dr. Horia Rosianu

Prof. dr. Iuliu Scurtu, coordinator of the Veterinary Cardiology Service USAMV Cluj-Napoca, and primary cardiologist Horia Roșianu, with expertise in electrophysiology, implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators from the Heart Institute “Niculae Stăncioiu”, Professor PhD at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Iuliu Hațieganu” Cluj-Napoca”, implanted a pacemaker to a bulldog, named Arni.
The difficult surgery took place on Friday, April 11, at our university’s clinic, lasted three hours and was a success.
“Together with Dr. Rosianu, we successfully implanted a pacemaker in our clinic in a patient who presented multiple daily episodes of fainting. The operation was successful and a first. A new life has just begun for the cute bulldog Arni!”, said Prof. Dr. Iuliu Scurtu, coordinator of the Veterinary Cardiology Service of USAMV Cluj-Napoca.
It’s an extraordinary result of the outstanding collaboration between veterinary and human medicine that has made Arni’s family happy.
“Dogs with heart problems have a real chance in Cluj-Napoca with the first-ever operation whose unwanted star was our Arni. Dear doctors, Prof. Iuliu Scurtu, Prof. Horia Rosianu, Dr. Iulia Melega, Dr. Ioana Vasilciuc, thank you for giving us back the soul of our home”, said Daniel, Arni’s owner.
