“Green Campus”, an event hosted by USAMV Cluj-Napoca (Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Biotechnologies) for hundreds of high school students, who will learn about biotechnologies in art, food fraud, aquaculture biotope, animal behavior and welfare or the life of bees and silkworms

The Campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (USAMV) Cluj-Napoca opens its doors on Saturday, May 10, 2025, for hundreds of high school students passionate about life sciences. “Green Campus 2025 – The Faculty is cooler than you thought!” is the event dedicated every year to young people who are not yet familiar with the attractive undergraduate degree programs of the Faculty of Animal Sciences and Biotechnology: Animal Science; Biotechnology; Animal Behavior and Welfare.

About 150 students from classes XI-XII from high schools and technological colleges from Seini, Dej, Șimleu-Silvaniei, Cluj-Napoca and Bistrița have already confirmed their presence, who will have the opportunity, through the care of teachers and 45 student volunteers, to take part in a varied program on the campus of USAMV Cluj-Napoca, starting at 10.00.

Thus, the event organized in partnership with the “Avram Iancu” Emergency Situations Inspectorate Cluj includes attractive workshops and presentations, along with curricular activities, as follows:

  • Biotechnologies in the arts – making pendants from in vitro-grown plants that can be worn as accessories using micropropagation biotechnology;
  • Chemistry in a different way – a workshop in which experiments take place, such as making a volcano or a chemical reaction, with a silver mirror on the walls of a test tube;
  • Milk or Trickery? – A workshop where students will become detectives, trying to spot fake food;
  • Functional foods – students will learn about foods with health benefits and make food-medicines or an innovative food  product; a fun way to make a delicious probiotic yoghurt ice-cream using liquid nitrogen;
  • Bee smart, bee heathy, bee good! – a workshop that brings to light, with the help of an observation hive, the life of a family of bees, plus tasting of products from the hive (honey, pollen, etc). This workshop will also take you into the lesser-known world of silkworms, with a presentation of the stages in their life and the applications of silkworm products;
  • Animal quizz – a fun workshop that takes students into the world as seen through the eyes of animals, encouraging competition through a set of questions about the behavior and welfare of animals (pets, farm and exotic ones);
  • Aquaculture biotope – visit to the University’s Aquarium Complex, followed by a workshop on how to set up and populate an aquarium;
  • MicroVerse – presenting the unseen world of the human cell, the fundamental unit of life. Through direct observation under the microscope, students will discover the structure and mystery underlying our existence;
  • Molecule of Life – demonstration workshop on DNA extraction and use;
  • Plant Universe – students will learn about the plants and seeds used in animal and human food, as well as a method to assess the production of grass production in grassland;
  • ISU Cluj – presentation and demonstration of first-aid measures;
  • Viewing of clips made by student teams in the framework of the film workshop “Science communication through stories, films and animation”, organized with the Persona Association, with the support of SciFilmIt. Theme of the short films: challenges and achievements of research work at USAMV Cluj-Napoca.

Green Campus 2025 is in its 8th edition, and since 2017 and so far more than 1,500 high school students from several counties have participated in the annual event organized by FZB.
